Baseball:
Two days after Upland’s Dylan Webb went the distance and allowed a pair of unearned runs in a 4-2 victory at Damien, Nathan Ries got the ball for the Spartans in game two of a three-game Baseline League series.
And Ries didn’t waste the opportunity.
He tossed a three-hit shutout in Damien’s 3-0 victory at Memorial Park in Upland.
Ries didn’t issue a walk and struck out five.
Of his 81 pitches, 58 were strikes.
Dominic Nava, Joaquin Covarrubias and Jake Mensen singled for the Highlanders.
Max Biddle went the distance, allowing three runs on 10 hits.
Biddle walked a pair of fanned five DHS batters.
Nikko Paoletto walked, singled, doubled and scored a pair of runs.
Eli Bechtel was credited with all three RBIs on a first-inning single and a sac fly in the third.
Julian Hines singled, doubled and scored.
Devin Perez walked and singled, while JT Riley, Andrew Carter, Ty Tancredi and Jaden Kidder had one single apiece in the win.
Up next: The Spartans and Highlanders will meet up Friday afternoon in La Verne to decide the series victor.
The first pitch is set for 3:15.
