College Baseball:
Chaffey opened its three-game Inland Empire Athletic Conference series with third-place Cerro Coso on Tuesday having dropped last week’s series to fourth-place Desert, 2-1.
Brock Mayer and Brian Garcia made sure the Panthers got off to a great start.
Mayer went seven scoreless innings, and he allowed just one hit in Chaffey’s 6-0 victory over the visiting Coyotes.
Mayer issued three walks and fanned eight.
Garcia provided two scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
He walked one and struck out five.
Cole Fowler had the lone hit for Cerro Coso.
Michael Karlin was stuck with the loss, allowing two runs on one hit over two innings.
Karlin walked one and fanned a pair of Chaffey batters.
Ryder Young drew a pair of walks, scored twice, hit a solo HR and drove in another run on a sac fly.
Jacob Billings had an RBI double and scored once.
David Loera walked and scored a pair of runs.
AJ Hurtado walked twice, singled, scored and had one RBI.
Yahir Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Up next: The Panthers travel to Cerro Coso on Thursday at 2:30.
