Boys Soccer:

After a 5-2 setback to Kaiser on December 27th, the Maranatha boys soccer program had a record of 3-4-2.

And had someone suggested that MHS would go on to become the most accomplished program in school history this season, you might have wondered if they had been hanging with Cheech and Chong before making that statement.

But that’s exactly what happened.

According to former athletic directors and longtime coaches, the Maranatha boys soccer program just became the first team to secure a CIF-SS (Division 6) and a CIF State (D-5) championship in the same year.

Just one week after claiming a 2-1 victory at Wilson (in OT) in the CIF-SS D-6 title game, the Minutemen outlasted Castle Park, 2-1, in the championship game of the CIF State Division 5 playoffs.

Luca Youssefian got MHS off to a terrific and quick start.

Youssefian’s shot from 25 yards out beat the keeper who was off his line.

Castle Park scored midway through the second half to even the game at 1-1.

Moments later, the Castle Park keeper got a red card for playing the ball with his hands outside the box.

Caleb Freeman would score the eventual game winner on a long throw in from Miles Romero.

Lorenzo Rodriguez had three big saves in goal for the Minutemen.

Maranatha finished the 2023-24 season having gone 50 days without a loss, and it was a 13-game win streak that helped the Minutemen clinch Olympic League, CIF-SS Division 6 and CIF State Division 5 championships.

They were also clutch.

Five of Maranatha’s eight postseason wins came by one goal.

Congrats to Coach Haynes, his staff and their players.
