Boys Basketball:
After falling 11 nights ago in the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinal to Windward, Damien opened CIF State Division 1 play in San Diego.
And the No. 12 seeded Spartans controlled throughout in a 69-44 victory at No. 5 St. Augustine.
Damien led by 19 at the break, and they enjoyed a 59-31 lead after three quarters.
Eli Garner scored a game-high 19 points for DHS, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Jacob Allen hit four 3’s and finished with 16 points.
Nate Garcia (9) and Xavier Clinton (8) combined for 16 points in the blowout.
Paision Polamalu led St. Augustine with 17 points, and Isaiah Hasten had 12.
Up next: The Spartans will host Redondo Union on Thuesday night at 7.
The No. 13 Sea Hawks (25-10) defeated No. 4 Montgomery, 84-69, in their first-round contest.
