Fifteen competitors from within the 210 Prep Sports coverage zone (or just outside) remained in the championship portion of their bracket at day one of the three-day CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.

And that includes six boys and nine girls.

Zachary Samano (106, Chino), Ronnie Ramirez (120, Walnut), Aaron Contreras (132, Walnut), Jacob Bell (138, Etiwanda), Evan Manzo (165, Etiwanda), Sonny Acuna (190, Northview) all made it unscathed.

As did Destiny Huitron (100, Arroyo) Anaya Falcon (105, Walnut), Deandra Meza (110, Walnut), BK Martinez (110, Ayala), Samantha Rivera (115, Northview), Eliana Garcia (Walnut, 120), Sam Sachs (Glendora, 125), Jasmine Macias (130, Walnut) and Faith Bartoszek (140, Northview).

While most wrestled two matches at most, Etiwanda had a pair of competitors go 3-0 on Thursday at the Mechanics Bank Arena.

Jacob Bell (138) secured three consecutive pins to earn a spot in Friday’s quarterfinal.

Evan Manzo (165) began the day with a tech fall, then a major decision, and he would defeat Brae Sepulveda (La Costa Canyon), 3-2.

Top-seeded Ronnie Ramirez had a first-round pin and a 15-6 victory over Micah Viloria of Merrill.

Chino’s Zachary Samano (106) was impressive with a first-round 15-0 tech fall, and a pin over Brawley’s Benjamin Limentang at 3:23.

Walnut’s Aaron Contreras (132) secured a decision victory and then a second-round pin.

Northview’s Sonny Acuna opened his run at state with a pair of pins in the 190-pound division.

Acuna will face No. 3 seeded, Brokton Borelli (Los Banos) on Friday.

Bonita’s Tristan Fernandez put himself in an uphill climb.

The Bearcats junior dropped a 5-2 decision to Giovanni Ruiz (Wasco).

His coach, Rob Froh, still believes Fernandez can do some damage in the 150-pound weight class.

For the girls, Arroyo’s Destiny Huitron (100) picked up a pin, and then an 8-5 victory over Gilroy’s Jaelle Cortez in the second round.

Top-seeded Anaya Falcon (Walnut) pinned her way into tomorrow’s quarterfinal round of the 105-pound weight class.

Deandra Meza (No. 1 seed, Walnut) secured a pin and a major decision.

Ayala’s BK Martinez (110) defeated Hailee Moreno (San Fernando), 12-3, in the first round.

And Martinez would earn her spot in the quarterfinal round with a 9-4 victory of Granite Hills’ Tori Niimi.

Samantha Rivera (115) had an impressive day with a pin and decision victory.

Rivera will face top-seeded Isabella Marie Gonzales (Clovis East) on Friday.

Walnut’s Eliana Garcia (120) had a victory via pin-fall and decision, and she will battle No. 2 seed, Alejandra Valdiviezo of Poway.

Glendora’s Sam Sachs breezed her way into the quarters.

Sachs pinned Jaelyn White (Yuba City) at 1:07 in the first round, and then finished off Alexa Calleja (San Pedro) at 0:58.

Walnut’s Jasmine Macias (130) had a pair of pins, both coming in 40 seconds or less.

Northview’s Faith Bartoszek is looking really strong.

Bartoszek pinned Aliyah Shumaker (Arvin) at 1:24 and followed that with a stick of Aila Duus (Freemont) at 0:51.

Competitors who lost on day one will have to make it through Friday without a loss or they’ll be eliminated.

Those who win matches in the championship quarterfinals advance to Saturday morning’s semifinal round.

Losers in quarterfinal round bouts could still finish as high as third if they won out the rest of the way.
