CIF-SS Masters Meet:

The CIF-Southern Section’s best met up on Friday in Palm Springs to earn individual spots at next weekend’s CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.

The top-six officially placed, but only the top-five from the blue and gold brackets from each of the 14 weight classes will move on.

On Saturday, the girls will take center stage at Palm Springs High School.

Etiwanda and San Marino had two champions, and Walnut had the other.

Northview, Walnut and Chino are sending four wrestlers each to compete inside the Mechanics Bank Arena next Thursday-Saturday.

Etiwanda had three qualifiers, San Marino two, and both Bonita and Los Osos are sending one each.

Walnut’s Ronnie Ramirez won the area’s first title, and it was also the most competitive.

Ramirez edged Valencia’s Slater Hicks, 2-1, in overtime to claim the 120-pound gold bracket.

Etiwanda’s Jacob Bell (138 gold) went 4-0, with three pins and a decision victory.

Bell pinned Paloma Valley’s Jose Jimenez in 1:57 to secure the 138-pound gold bracket.

San Marino’s Ryder Yoshitake breezed through the 144-pound gold bracket.

Yoshitake went 4-0, with two tech falls, a 9-2 victory in the semifinals, and he would go on to pin Viviano Gutierrez (Northview) in the title bout at 3:08.

Mikel Davi Uyemura (San Marino) pinned his first two opponents en route to a 150-pound gold championship.

In the finals, Uyemura defeated top-seeded Sean Otero of Norwalk, 3-1.

Etiwanda’s Evan Manzo opened the 165-pould gold bracket as the No. 2 seed.

By the end of the night, Manzo stood atop the podium.

After two pins and a major fall, Manzo claimed a 6-3 victory over top-seeded David Alonso of Palm Desert.

Northview’s Marcus Tolentino (106 Gold), Chino’s Zachary Samano (106 Blue), Northview’s Jovanni Evangelista (113 Blue), Walnut’s Christian Garcia (126 Gold), Walnut’s Aaron Contreras (132 Blue), Bonita’s Tristan Fernandez (150 Blue) and Chino’s Michael Vassalle (175 Blue) each placed second in their respective weight classes.
