Ayala still has some work to do.

But on Thursday night, the Bulldogs cleared the highest hurdle in their quest for an outright Palomares League championship.

AHS persevered, 43-30, in a showdown with their visitors from Bonita.

It looked like it was going to be a breeze, as Ayala had leads of 18-0 and 28-6.

The Bearcats, though, demonstrated their character and mettle, and with two matches to go, BHS pulled to within 31-30 of the Bulldogs.

Ayala would get two clutch pins at 215 (Brandon Townsell) and 285 (Carlos Britt) to close out the victory.

The Bulldogs won nine of the 14 matches.

Thursday’s dual started at 106 pounds.

Jayren Chen (106) and BK Martinez (113) got back-to-back pins for a 12-0 AHS lead.

Jacob Kim (120) and Ezekiel De La Rosa (126) won by scores of 4-1, and 7-3, respectively, to extend the lead to 18-0.

Dylan Garcia got the Bearcats on the board with his pin at 132 pounds.

John Gonzales (138) answered for Ayala with a pin, and Diego Eligio (144) claimed an 11-3 major decision.

Arguably the league’s best wrestler, Bonita’s Tristan Fernandez (150), was awarded a win via forfeit.

Mason Eligio (157) extended the Bulldogs advantage to 31-12 with his 4-1 decision victory.

Bonita got consecutive pins from Thomas Jiminez (165), Cole Parra (175), and 190-pound Michael Martinez to get BHS to within one point of AHS.

Parra’s pin over Jeshua Hennerty was a showdown between two talented football players.

As mentioned, Townsell and Britt refused to let Bonita complete a massive comeback, and it was Townsell’s stick as the buzzer rang at the end of the first period that secured the victory for Ayala.
