Boys Basketball:
Damien got tested in the first round of their own tournament.
The Spartans needed overtime to defeat Sunnyslope (Phoenix, AZ), 80-75, in a Platinum Division thriller.
The Vikings outscored DHS (22-17) in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Nate Garcia led the way for Damien with 22 points.
Xavier Clinton chipped in with 20 points, including three 3-pointers.
Clinton scored each of his 20 points in the second half.
Eli Garner finished with 16 and Jacob Allen had 13 points, nine of which came from beyond the 3-point arc.
John Mattingly hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 31 points for Sunnyslope.
Darius Wabbington and Rider Portela chipped in with 13 points apiece in the loss.
Up next: Damien will host De La Salle tonight (Thursday) at 5:30.
The Spartans (11-0) defeated Campbell Hall, 62-52, in their first-round game.
DHS is ranked ninth in the state by MaxPreps, and DLS is 13th.
