The magical postseason ride that Charter Oak was enjoying came to an end on Friday night in Fontana.
Trailing 21-14 in the waning moments, the Chargers drove all the way to the Jurupa Hills 4-yard line, but they turned the ball over on downs.
And that secured a CIF-SS Division 8 championship for the Spartans.
Jurupa Hills garnered a 203-21 (yard) advantage on the ground, and they took a 21-0 lead into the half.
Jordan Pernillo’s 2-yard TD run in the first quarter got JHHS on the board.
The Spartans got a 10-yard TD run from Damien Ortiz, and Michael Ephraim would follow that second-quarter score by returning a fumble 25 yards to paydirt.
Charter Oak’s sophomore quarterback, Corin Berry, scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.
Berry pulled COHS to within 21-14 of JHHS after he connected with Diego Flores on a 9-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter.
But the Chargers would fall just short.
Neither program did well on third down.
COHS was 2-for-12, and JHHS converted three times in 12 tries.
Berry completed 13-of-30 for 168 yards.
The lanky right-hander threw for one score and was intercepted twice.
Tony Huff carried the ball five times for 15 yards to lead the COHS ground game.
Legend Lyons had a game-highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (69).
Sean Munoz caught two passes for 69 yards.
Malachi Reed and Michael Ephraim had the two picks for Jurupa Hills.
Damien Ortiz (12-for-83 & one TD), Jordan Pernillo (14-79 & one TD) and Caleb Ruiz (16-for-41) combined for 203 yards on 42 carries and two scores.
Ruiz completed just 5-of-13 pass attempts for 95 yards and he was picked once (by LaVar Arrington).
