What happens when a program in the CIF-SS Division 8 semifinal round gets held to 30 net yards rushing?

They better hope their quarterback has a big night.

And a big night it was for Charter Oak sophomore, Corin Berry.

Berry completed 15-of-18 for 220 yards.

He threw for three TD’s, and as important, the slender right-hander did not turn the ball over.

Berry led the Chargers to a 42-16 victory over their visitors from Highland.

Charter Oak took a 35-0 lead into the break, and the outcome was never in doubt.

Berry got COHS on the board with a 1-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Curtiss Taylor would score on TD runs of 2 and 4 yards, and the Chargers led 21-0.

Berry found Sean Munoz on a 50-yard scoring strike, and Legend Lyons reeled in a 40-yard TD pass from Berry for the 35-0 advantage at the break.

Berry capped his night with a 17-yard TD pass to Antonio Reasby in the fourth quarter.

Taylor finished with 17 yards on six carries and the two scores.

Tony Huff carried the ball nine times for 23 yards.

Lyons had a monster night with 10 catches for 117 yards and one TD.

Reasby caught three passes for 44 yards.

Mitchell Gibbens went 5-for-5 on his extra-point attempts.

Highland’s Justin Wyatt completed 14-of-26 for 106 yards.

He tossed a 17-yard TD pass to Azim Bankhead in the third quarter.

Michael White and Jon’tae Beckwith both had picks for the COHS defense.

Wyatt also had a 23-yard TD run for the Bulldogs.

Up next: COHS will battle Jurupa Hills next week for the Division 8 championship.

The Spartans (7-6) defeated St. Pius, 31-21, to earn their title-game appearance.

Quotable:

Charter Oak coach, Dominic Farrar: Corin (Berry) had his most productive night of the season. He was a warrior tonight. He kind of came of age. Sometimes, it just clicks, and it clicked for him. To know him, is to understand him. He’s a gifted and talented athlete, but he’s also a phenomenal student, and his character is impreccable. Selfishly, what I enjoy most is having lunch together and watching film. Legend (Lyons) is a young man that always had so much potential. And to witness him reaching that potential, that reflects his body of work and honing in on his craft. Now, he’s a game changer. His body of work, again, is a reflection of how hard our staff has worked with him, and they’re bringing out the best in him.”
