Football:
Yup.
The same Don Lugo football program that started the season at 1-6 and went on to claim a San Antonio League title, has earned its spot in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 12 playoffs.
And if you know one thing about the Conquistadores, it’s the reliance they have on junior quarterback, Kalib Pacheco.
Santa Paula (8-1) waited for the boys from Chino to make that 97-mile trip past the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, and they had to like their chances of moving forward.
Calpreps actually had DLHS favored to win in a shootout, 38-37, two nights ago.
They got their shootout, but Don Lugo didn’t need any late-game dramatics, and they claimed a 45-31 victory over the Cardinals.
The Conquistadores took a 24-14 lead into the half, and persevered to earn a second-round home game this Friday.
As mentioned, how Pacheco goes is how Don Lugo goes.
And they both shined on Friday.
Pacheco completed 72-percent of his passes (26-of-36) for 445 yards.
The lanky junior threw six TD passes and was picked twice.
He also gained 50 yards on eight carries.
Almost every time Pacheco goes off, so does his favorite target, Gavin Hrynezuk.
That remained the case, as Hrynezuk caught 12 passes for 255 yards and three TD’s.
Joshua Morales had five receptions for 66 yards and two scores.
Noah Peck also caught a TD pass, and he finished the night with four receptions for 48 yards.
Boe Canty had three catches for 40 yards.
Canty also led the DLHS ground game with 100 yards on 15 carries.
Up next: Don Lugo will host Coachella Valley on Friday.
The Mighty Arabs (9-2) defeated visiting South El Monte, 46-27, in their first-round playoff game.
