Football:
Covina was supposed to make the 30-mile drive east to Fontana on Friday evening and have their season ended by Summit in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 8 playoffs.
Actually, the Skyhawks were going to send the Colts off with a 10-point setback, according to Calpreps, the website that sets the rankings, and thus, forms the postseason pairings.
But Kevin Glaspy, his staff and their players were having none of that.
Covina did watch a large lead disappear, but they regrouped and headed home happy with a 34-27 victory.
The Colts got a pretty balanced effort from its offense.
Jake Duronslet was an efficient 19-of-25 for 191 yards.
Duronslet didn’t turn the ball over, and he threw TD passes to three separate receivers.
The game winner was a fourth-quarter scoring strike to Karson Ulrich.
It was Ulrich’s only catch of the day, but he made it count.
Duronslet also gained a team-high 54 yards on the ground on seven carries.
Adrian Rachal caught five passes for 68 yards, including one score.
Abraham Perez had three receptions for 41 yards and one TD.
In all, eight Covina receivers had at least one catch in Friday’s win.
And seven of the eight had two or more receptions.
Joaquin Barragan carried the ball 13 times for 43 yards and a score.
And Joseph Rangel gained 45 yards on 13 carries, and that included a TD.
Jacob Perez had four carries for 12 yards.
To their credit, Summit rebounded from a large deficit and took a 27-20 lead in the third quarter.
But Duronslet had TD passes in the third and fourth quarter to send Covina to the quarterfinal round.
Up next: The Colts only have a three-mile drive this Friday, as they head to Charter Oak.
The Chargers secured a 21-14 victory at North Torrance.
