Football:

You had to be there to believe it.

Five weeks after Northview claimed a 14-13 victory at Bonita, the Vikings traveled to La Verne again to face the Bearcats in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs.

And there was enough that went on during the last two minutes of regulation and overtime to write an entire story.

With the scored tied at 14-14 and facing a fourth-and-goal from the 3-yard line, the reliable Manny Franco was lined up to kick a 20-yard field goal in overtime.

But the Northview defense jumped, and the ball got moved to just inside the 2-yard line.

After BHS co-head coaches Bo Beatty and Steve Bogan talked it over, they called Franco back to the sideline.

Daniel Mielke handed the ball to 6-foot-3, 220-pound Noah Mikhail, who rumbled into the west end zone for a 21-14 lead.

Northview, as they’ve done all year, bounced back.

The Vikings gave the ball to their star senior, Angel Barraza, and he got NHS to within 21-20 after his 5-yard TD run.

Marcel Perez, who is a CIF-SS champion as a player and head coach at Northview, decided to go for 2 and the win.

Dylan Ochoa, who filled in for an injured Erik Jimenez, found Dylan Cano for what looked to be the game-winning pass and catch.

Unfortunately for the boys in black pants and white jerseys, the officials called a false-start penalty and moved the ball back five yards.

The Vikings decided to take the safest and most prudent route, and they sent their kicker out to tie the game.

On the extra-point attempt, the ball never got high enough to clear the middle of the Bonita defensive line, and Cesar Candia was able to block it, and secure the win for the Bearcats.

It’s so cliché to say, but neither team deserved to lose last night.

Keanu Tauvao gave Northview a 7-0 lead on his four-yard TD run in the first quarter.

Tauvao had a monster game with 170 yards on 25 carries.

Cole Parra got Bonita even with a 1-yard TD run.

BHS would take its first lead of the game, as Daniel Mielke tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Dylan Robinson.

In the fourth quarter, Barraza had a 3-yard TD run and that eventually sent the game to overtime.

Bonita was without their leading receiver and running back (in yards & TD’s), Jayden Montenegro, after breaking his collarbone last week in a win over Charter Oak.

Northview had to have gotten sick to their collective stomach when quarterback Erik Jimenez was carted away in an ambulance after severely injuring his ankle in the second quarter.

Jimenez had completed 6-of-8 for 80 yards, and he had one five-yard carry before leaving the game and the stadium.

Barraza ended his career with 75 yards on 13 carries and the two TD’s.

Dwayne Thompson had a 42-yard reception for NHS.

Donovan Perez caught two passes for 33 yards, and Tauvao had a pair of receptions for 37 yards.

For Bonita, Mielke completed 16-of-36 for 208 yards.

The Bearcats freshman didn’t turn the ball over, and had the 10-yard TD to Robinson.

Adrian McCoy had an 87-yard TD run called back on a pair of penalties, but he still led Bonita with 63 yards rushing on five carries.

McCoy also caught four passes for 46 yards.

Mikhail had five receptions for 53 yards, and Ryder Cadam caught two passes for 44 yards.

Robinson finished with 38 receiving yards on three catches.

At the very bottom of this story are interviews with Bonita and Northview coaches and players.

Up next: The Bearcats travel to Thousand Oaks next Friday.

The Lancers (8-3) defeated visiting El Modena, 41-34, on Friday evening.
