A big thanks to Zack Morton for sending in stats throughout the entire 2023 season
Football:
It has to be a rarity that a 4-6 program, which finished fifth in league, was rewarded with a first-round home game.
But that was the case for Huntington Beach in the CIF-SS Division 6 opener.
And to their credit, the Oilers made the most of it, and ended Glendora’s season with a 29-21 victory.
Before losing him to injury in the second quarter, Simon Zwick gave GHS a 7-0 lead after his 66-yard TD run.
HB would answer back when Brady Edmunds connected with Hunter Gray on an 8-yard TD pass.
The Oilers would take a 15-7 lead thanks to Tyler Young’s 6-yard run.
Glendora got even, as Eric Najarro hit Decker DeGraaf on a 17-yard scoring strike, and a successful 2-point conversion.
Hunter Lemos had field goals of 42 and 24 yards for GHS.
Gray caught a 34-yard TD pass from Edmunds with 50 seconds left in the first half, and that gave the Oilers a 22-18 lead at the break.
The second half only produced a combined 10 points.
Lemos’ 24-yard field goal at 1:53 of the third quarter pulled Glendora to within 22-21 of HBHS.
Edmunds, however, would put the game away with a 1-yard TD run with just over three minutes to play.
Najarro finished 13-of-35 for 148 yards, and that included the TD pass to DeGraaf.
DeGraaf caught five passes for 72 yards and the score.
Zwick had gained 75 yards on six carries before leaving the game.
Huntington Beach blocked a 44-yard field goal attempt midway through the fourth quarter.
Aiden Yamazaki picked off a pass for Glendora.
GHS finished the season at 6-5.
