Football:
St. Francis hoped it could secure an outright Angelus League title on Friday night.
Their hosts from St. Paul had other ideas.
The Swordsmen would edge the Golden Knights, 37-32, and handed SFHS their only league setback in 2023.
St. Francis and Loyola both finished 4-1, but the Golden Knights defeated the Cubs in the league opener, 25-21, back on September 29th.
This game was back and forth throughout.
In fact, three of the four quarters were decided by two points or less, and St. Paul had a 14-10 advantage in the second period.
John Calmette had TD runs of 2, 1 and 5 yards.
After his second TD, Calmette caught the two-point conversion pass from John Sanders to pull SFHS to within 35-32 with 3:52 to play in the third quarter.
The only points of the fourth period came with 2:32 to play.
St. Paul sacked Sanders in the end zone for a safety.
Shawn Sanders booted a 31-yard field goal.
And Jamie Lawyer returned a kickoff 94 yards for a TD.
Up next: The Golden Knights will get their playoff opponent on Sunday morning at 10.
