Football:
Two weeks ago, many thought San Dimas would have a difficult time making the playoffs after a 26-12 defeat at the hands of visiting Northview.
It was the Valle Vista League opener for both programs.
Part of the reason for that skepticism was that SDHS had to travel to Diamond Ranch, who was 7-1 overall, and 1-0 in VVL games.
And with only three league games, an 0-2 start would have been a death knell for the Saints.
At the top of the story, where I said ‘many thought’ they would not earn a playoff berth, that list didn’t include a single player or coach of this proud football team.
SDHS traveled to Pomona in week nine and secured a convincing 34-20 victory over the Panthers.
On Thursday night, Diamond Ranch did themselves and San Dimas a big favor with its 36-28 victory over first place Northview.
And that meant an SDHS victory at last-place Los Altos on Friday would earn the Saints a three-way share of the VVL championship.
The Saints took advantage of that opportunity and cruised to a 29-0 victory in Hacienda Heights.
They took a 22-0 lead into the break and the game was never in doubt.
Nathan Almaraz started the scoring with a 5-yard TD in the first quarter to give SDHS a 7-0 lead.
On a fourth-down play, SDHS quarterback Brandon Meredith hit Julian Vigil on a 26-yard TD pass.
And for all intents and purposes, Alex Flores put the game on ice when he recovered a fumble and brought it back nearly the length of the field for a TD.
The Saints went for 2, got it, and led, 22-0.
Brian Jackson capped the San Dimas scoring with a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Up next: San Dimas will discover its playoff opponent on Sunday morning at 10.
