Football:
Rio Hondo Prep looked a lot like Rio Hondo Prep on Friday night.
The Kares responded well to last week’s dominating setback to a very good Brentwood team with a 38-7 Gold Coast League victory over their visitors from Campbell Hall.
RHP finishes the regular season 9-1 and they tied Rancho Cucamonga for the most wins in the 210 Prep Sports coverage zone (27 teams).
Some of the team stats are closer than one might think based on the final score.
But the Kares bread-and-butter, the running game, did what they do.
RHP out-rushed Campbell Hall, 238-76, and four of their five TD’s came via the ground game.
Caeden Holcomb had TD runs of 24 and 26 yards, and he finished with 55 yards on just three carries.
Nate Curtis had a game-high 76 yards rushing on four carries.
Curtis had a 37-yard TD in the second quarter to extend the RHP lead to 31-0.
Alex Mustain booted a 39-yard field goal, and he hooked up with Joshua Taflinger on a 15-yard TD.
Mustain was 2-of-5 for 40 yards.
Yanick Diaz capped the RHP scoring with a 1-yard keeper in the fourth quarter.
The only points allowed by the Kares defense was a 47-yard TD run by Andrew Powell with 7:41 to play in the game.
Powell carried the ball six times for 61 yards.
Mingus Allen was 14-of-29 for 128 yards.
Mingus didn’t throw a TD and he was picked by RHP’s Diego Householder.
Up next: The Kares will find out their first-round opponent on Sunday morning at 10.
