Editor’s Note: WCHS did not post their individual stats online.

On October 13th, Don Lugo entered the San Antonio League portion of their schedule at 1-6, and they had lost four consecutive games.

They were just three weeks away from being able to forget about 2023, and look forward to 2024.

But a funny thing happened.

The Conquistadores won a 52-44 shootout against Chaffey in their league opener.

And up next was a trip to West Covina to battle the 7-1 Bulldogs.

WCHS had won six straight games, and Calpreps gave the Bulldogs a 95-percent chance of winning.

They predicted a 25-point blowout (42-17) in favor of the home team.

No one, however, could have predicted what happened on Friday night, including the players and coaches of both programs.

West Covina (27) and Don Lugo (21) combined for 48 fourth-quarter points.

The Bulldogs scored on a first-and-goal play with 38 seconds remaining.

But WCHS only took a six-point lead after the point-after attempt failed.

DLHS was 75 yards and an extra-point away from a season-changing victory, but they only had those 38 seconds and no timeouts.

One of the area’s most unknown and yet consequential quarterbacks is Don Lugo junior, Kalib Pacheco.

And oh man, this kid put on a show.

Pacheco led the Conquistadores down the field.

He had completions of 33 and 38 yards to Gavin Hrynezuk.

When he took the final snap, there were just over 10 seconds on the clock, and the ball was on the 6-yard line.

And on a play that was just installed this week, Pacheco found Anthony Martinez wide open in the south end zone and the game was tied at 40-40.

After the Bulldogs called two timeouts to ice the Don Lugo kicker, Issac Lopez converted the extra-point, and the Conquistadores headed back to Chino with a 41-40 victory.

Lopez booted two field goals to go with 5-for-5 night on XP’s.

DLHS is now 2-0, and they have the opportunity to secure an outright San Antonio League championship this Friday if they’re able to defeat visiting Claremont (1-8) at 7.

But back to Pacheco and his remarkable night.

He finished 30-of-58 for 503 yards and four TD’s.

He also scored on a 3-yard rushing TD as well.

Four separate Don Lugo receivers caught TD passes on Friday.

But Pacheco’s favorite targets were Gavin Hrynezuk (nine catches for 197 yards & one TD) and Samuel Chavez (five receptions for 157 yards & one score).

For the season, Pacheco has thrown for 2,779 yards and 37 TD’s.

He has a better than 4-to-1 TD-to-interception ratio.
