College Football:
The Chaffey College victory tour continued on Saturday.
The Panthers claimed a 41-27 American Metro Conference victory at Desert.
Chaffey is now 7-0 overall, and 2-0 in conference.
They used a 20-10 advantage in the second half to hand Desert its first conference loss.
The game was very close, at least statistically.
Chaffey had 26-22 and 462-413 advantages in first downs and total offense, respectively.
Desert threw for 285 yards as compared to 275 for the Panthers, but Chaffey had a 187-128 advantage in rushing.
Dereun Dortch continued his tremendous play in leading the offense.
Dortch completed 19-of-26 for 275 yards and three scores.
He connected with Corey Cabriales on a 7-yard score, Demajea Mitchell from 35 yards out, and William Davis on a 16-yard TD.
Dortch carried the ball 11 times for 46 yards, and that included a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter to extend Chaffey’s lead to 34-24.
Jayson Cortes continues to be the Panthers’ workhorse.
Cortes gained 136 yards on 19 carries, and he scored on a 1-yard TD run.
Cortes also caught three passes for 68 yards.
Cabriales had 10 receptions for 129 yards.
With 9:18 remaining in the fourth quarter, Jordan Collins put the game on ice with his 97-yard kickoff return for a score.
Syrano Ware led the Chaffey defense with 11 tackles, including two for-loss.
Taunu’u Brown finished with seven tackles, while Ronald Williams, Corey David and Sean Ivy tallied six tackles apiece.
Ivy had one sack, and Brown, Williams and Davis were in on one sack each.
Jordan Collins also picked a pass and brought it back 42 yards before being tackled.
Brycen Blankenship completed 17-of-28 for 204 yards for Desert.
Blankenship didn’t toss a TD or pick.
Devonte Armstrong was 2-of-6 for 81 yards, with one TD and a pick.
Isaac Eberhardt caught a 78-yard TD pass from Armstrong.
Ilyas Abdullah had 58 yards on the ground on 12 carries.
He scored on TD runs of 6 and 9 yards.
Eberhardt caught six passes for 131 yards and one TD.
Up next: Chaffey travels to winless Compton (0-6) next Saturday.
