Football:
Ayala drove out to Covina on Thursday night and left Charter Oak with a 45-10 victory.
The win all but secured the Mountain West League title.
Technically, the Bulldogs will officially regain the MWL crown when they defeat visiting Alta Loma (1-9, 0-2) next Friday.
But what had to make Ayala coach AJ Gracia so proud is the fact that the Bulldogs got massive contributions in all three phases of the game.
And that includes their star running back, Marquis Monroe.
Monroe only carried the ball seven times, but it was good enough for 104 yards rushing.
Monroe had TD runs of 81 and 2 yards.
He only had one reception, but that went for a 36-yard TD from Maximus Barroso.
Barroso finished 8-of-12 for 131 yards.
Barroso also hit Jaden Valenzuela on an 18-yard TD pass in the back corner of the south end zone to extend the Bulldogs lead to 24-3 in the second quarter.
He also scored on a 2-yard quarterback sneak to enact the running clock after the Bulldogs took a 45-10 lead.
Nathan Bull picked off a COHS pass and brought it back 50 yards for the AHS defense.
And Nick Lane went 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts, and he booted a 33-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Drew Amico had four receptions for 50 yards and picked off a pass on defense.
Charter Oak’s Curtis Taylor had a 2-yard rushing TD in the fourth quarter.
And Taylor would have had a second score, but his long TD run was called back due to a penalty.
Mitchell Gibbens looks to be one of the SGV area’s best long-range kickers, and he proved that again with a 42-yard field goal.
As mentioned, Ayala will host last-place Alta Loma next week, and the winner of the Charter Oak-Bonita game will secure the MWL’s second playoff spot.
