College Football:
Far more times than not, the offense gets the lion’s share of the credit for JC football wins.
On Saturday, and for PCC, it was all about their defense.
The Lancers held visiting Santa Monica to four rushing yards and 181 of total offense in a 17-3 win.
PCC improved to 5-1 after holding the Corsairs to 17 points under their weekly scoring average.
Four minutes and 16 seconds into Saturday’s game, John Corum booted a 40-yard field goal to give Santa Monica a 3-0 lead.
The PCC defense didn’t bend, let alone break, over the final 55-plus minutes on Saturday.
It took the Lancers offense until the 12:29 mark of the second quarter to take their first lead.
Wyatt Oak scored on a 3-yard run, and PCC led, 7-3.
Justin Vergara’s 37-yard field goal midway through the third quarter extended the Lancers advantage to 10-3.
And Joshua Barron caught an 11-yard TD pass from Kaden Taylor with 7:13 to play for the final score of the game.
Oak went 10-of-15 for 67 yards and was picked once.
He also gained 63 yards on 10 carries and the one score.
Taylor completed 9-of-12 for 76 yards, and that included the fourth-quarter TD pass to Barron.
Isaac Glover had a game-high 80 yards rushing on 14 carries for PCC.
Greg Moore had four receptions for 42 yards, and Daniel Schwam caught three passes for 29 yards.
Kyden Bailey and Adrian Ramirez led the Lancers defense with six tackles apiece.
Jachai Pulley, Torriq Brumfield and Idriq Carmichael each contributed five tackles.
Ramirez and Brumfield had two sacks apiece.
Up next: PCC travels to LA Pierce next Saturday at 6.

Quotable:
PCC coach, Robert Tucker: “We had a lot of guys out for this game for one reason or another. I was very proud of all of the guys that stepped up and contributed to the win. We knew that we needed to stop the run on defense, and I felt like we were able to limit their explosive plays. Our edge pass rushers did a great job of being disruptive all night. We were able to contain Santa Monica’s quarterback and make him step up in the pocket, which limited his opportunities to throw the ball down the field. Getting the first win in league is very important. We just need to keep improving each week and continue to play complimentary football.”
