Boys Athlete of the Week:

Quite simply, Marquis Monroe was the difference in Ayala’s 29-26 victory over their visitors from Bonita.

It’s not politically correct to say, but the win likely secures the Bulldogs hopes of regaining the Mountain West League championship.

Ayala still has Charter Oak and Alta Loma left, and with zero disrespect to the Chargers and Braves, they are a combined 3-13 in 2023.

On Friday, Monroe punished the Bearcats defense with more than 280 yards of total offense.

He scored long TD’s of the rushing and receiving variety.

Monroe carried the ball 22 times for 190 yards.

Marquis had a 42-yard TD run.

He also had six receptions for 105 yards.

And he took a Maximus Barroso pass 59-yards to paydirt to close out the scoring for AHS.

The victory marks Ayala’s eighth consecutive win over a very talented and well-coached Bonita program.

Aside from his stats on both sides of the ball, it was Monroe’s ability to pick up three first downs late that allowed Ayala to end the Bearcats chances.

Through the first eight games, the Bulldogs senior has 1,152 yards rushing and 15 TD’s.

Up next: AHS travels to COHS on Thursday night.

The Chargers put a 41-7 beatdown on their hosts from Alta Loma.
