Friday night will forever be a special memory for the entire Sanders family.
John Sanders, a junior, and his freshman brother, Shawn, played key roles in St. Francis’ 41-25 victory over Cathedral.
The Golden Knights improved to 3-0 in Angelus League games, and they control their own destiny.
But back to the Sanders brothers.
After allowing a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening play of the game by the Phantoms’ Anthony White, St. Francis would score the next 34 points.
It started with a 15-yard TD pass from John Sanders to Preston Jernegan.
Jamie Lawyer blocked a Cathedral field goal attempt and Shawn Sanders picked it up and brought it back 95 yards for a TD.
Here’s where it gets really good.
Leading 14-7, John Sanders handed the ball off to John Calmette.
Calmette would give the ball to Shawn Sanders on a reverse, and Shawn found his big bro on a 10-yard TD pass.
John Sanders hooked up with Tyler Cofre on a 65-yard TD to extend the lead to 27-7 lead in the third quarter.
John Sanders also had TD runs of 26 and 37 yards to close out his memorable night.
Cathedral’s Jaden Jefferson threw for three scores in Friday’s loss.
Jefferson connected with Anthony White on a five-yard score, hit Michael Ashford from 18 yards out and closed out his night with a 4-yard scoring pass to Antonio Walton.
St. Francis now has one-game leads over St. Paul and Loyola with two to go.
The Golden Knights face last-place Crespi next week and then close out the 2023 regular season at St. Paul in what will likely decide the Angelus League championship.
