Football:
It’s one thing to know what Ayala and Marquis Monroe are going to do.
And it’s another to stop them.
Monroe took over Friday’s Mountain West League opener with more than 280 yards of total offense.
And that included one rushing and one receiving TD in Ayala’s 29-26 victory over visiting Bonita.
It’s Ayala’s eighth consecutive win over the Bearcats.
Monroe carried the ball 22 times for 190 yards, including a 59-yard TD run.
The Ayala senior also caught six passes for 105 yards, and Monroe had a 42-yard TD reception from quarterback Maximus Barroso to close out the scoring for AHS.
But it was his ability to pick up three first downs late that bled the clock dry and secured the win.
Jedi Hernandez had 54 yards rushing on nine carries and Barroso gained 26 yards on six carries.
Barroso completed 9-of-15 for 220 yards, two scores, and one interception.
Barraso had a 96-yard TD pass to Jaden Valenzuela to take a 15-10 lead.
Valenzuela finished with two receptions for 108 yards.
Jayden Montenegro led the BHS ground game with 102 yards rushing.
Cole Parra had a pair of short TD runs for the Bearcats.
Manny Franco connected on two field goals.
Daniel Mielke didn’t have his best night, but he’ll bounce back next week.
And the freshman did find Dylan Robinson on a TD pass.
Quotable:
Bonita co-head coach, Bo Beatty: “Give all the credit in the world to Ayala. Marquis Monroe is a very special talent and I have nothing but respect for him. Ayala coach (AJ) Gracia was always one step ahead of me tonight and we just came up short. He’s just a really good ball coach. We’ll get our guys ready for Alta Loma next week.”
