Football:
Rio Hondo Prep remains perfect in 2023, as the Kares picked up a 35-7 victory at Viewpoint in the Gold Coast League opener for both programs.
RHP scored the game’s first 28 points and the outcome was never in doubt.
As all Rio Hondo Prep opponents do, Viewpoint was set to try and slow the Kares rushing attack.
But Mark Carson’s boys threw the Patriots a curveball on Friday night.
RHP got four passing TD’s from its quarterback, Alex Mustain.
And Mustain also had a 9-yard TD run to get the Kares on the board.
Mustain completed 9-of-14 for 160 yards and didn’t turn the ball over.
He had TD 49-and-42-yard TD passes to Nate Curtis.
Joshua Taflinger reeled in a 17-yard scoring strike, and Mustain and Yanick Diaz hooked up on a 12-yard TD in the fourth quarter.
The only Patriots score of the game was a 1-yard run by Logan Price in the first quarter, which pulled Viewpoint to within 28-7.
Curtis caught five passes for 117 yards and the two scores.
Noah Penunuri carried the ball six times for 43 yards, and Caeden Holcomb gained 40 yards on five carries.
Seth Forrester led Viewpoint and all rushers with 59 yards on 11 carries.
Holcomb had a game-high eight tackles and a sack for RHP, and Nic Harrington finished with six tackles in Friday’s win.
On a side note, Mustain was also 4-for-4 on his point-after attempts.
Up next: The Kares travel to Brentwood on Friday.
The Eagles defeated Campbell Hall, 44-0, on Friday.
