Football:

It wasn’t the way La Salle started on Friday night that mattered.

It was very much the way the Lancers finished.

Trailing throughout Friday’s Del Rey League contest at St. Genevieve, La Salle took its first and only lead of the game with less than four minutes to play.

Zach Lifton hooked up with Aidan Leyland on a 25-yard scoring strike that allowed the Lancers to leave Panorama City with a 24-21 victory.

In the first quarter, Charlie Krappman connected on a 37-yard field goal to pull the Lancers to within 7-3.

But that’s all the Valiants defense surrendered in the first half.

La Salle would get a 7-yard TD run from Thomas Gomez, and David Vanden Bosch rumbled in from one yard out in the third quarter.

But they headed into the final 12 minutes trailing 21-17.

Thanks to the Lifton-to-Leyland TD connection, however, La Salle heads into its bye week on a high.

Lifton completed 14-of-23 for 259 yards.

He was picked twice.

Vanden Bosch was the workhorse for Ben Buys.

He carried the ball 30 times for 146 yards and one score.

Drew Ward caught six passes for 90 yards.

Mauricio Pavon had five receptions for 65 yards.

Leyland finished with 104 receiving yards on three catches and the game-winning score.

On the defensive side of the ball, Alex Darlas and Chris Cardenas had two sacks apiece.

Gomez contributed five tackles, including three for-loss.
