Girls Athletes of the Week:
The Claremont girls tennis program has dominated the Palomares League for quite some time.
In the past, however, the Lady Wolfpack relied heavily on their singles players to carry much of the load.
In 2023 thus far, it’s the CHS doubles teams that have been key in their success.
And Thursday’s showdown at Bonita is a perfect example of that.
Trailing 7-5 as they headed into the final round, it looked to many that the match would finish 9-9 and that games won would determine the winner.
Claremont had other ideas.
They won five of the final six matches to edge the Bearcats, 10-8.
And it was the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams that came up especially clutch on Thursday.
No. 1 Camila Fernandez and Paige Ruffner went 3-0 by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0.
Nika Cait Crisostomo and her partner, Keyra Miao, also went 3-0, and claimed set victories of 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3.
