Chaffey College made a huge statement on Saturday night.
In a battle of 4-0 programs, the Panthers finished strong and defeated their visitors from Pasadena City College, 31-21, to remain unbeaten.
The Lancers scored with 33 seconds to play to make the outcome appear closer than it was.
After PCC secured a 14-7 first-half lead, Chaffey’s would score the next 24 points to pull away.
A key moment in the game came in the second quarter, when, on consecutive PCC drives, the Panthers defense forced a turnover on downs from the 4-yard line, and the Lancers would follow that with a missed 31-yard field goal attempt.
The rain came and went, and to some extent, it affected the passing game of both programs.
Dereun Dortch tossed a 17-yard TD pass to William Davis, and a 6-yarder to Jeremiah Beck.
Dortch also scored on a 1-yard run with 7:34 to play in the fourth quarter to extend the Chaffey lead to 28-14.
Dortch completed 17-of-31 for 273 yards, the two scores and he didn’t turn the ball over.
He also carried the ball 10 times for 53 yards.
Jayson Cortes was the Panthers’ workhorse.
Cortes had 106 rushing yards on 30 carries, and that included a 1-yard TD in the second quarter to tie the game at 14-14.
Corey Cabriales had five receptions for 120 yards and Davis finished with 92 yards receiving on five catches.
Anthony Hagan’s 31-yard field goal with 2:46 to play capped the Panthers’ scoring.
PCC’s Isaac Glover scored on a 7-yard run to give the Lancers a 7-0 lead just over five minutes into the game.
With the scored tied at 7-7, PCC quarterback Kekahi Graham threw a 20-yard scoring strike to William Parra to reclaim the advantage at 14-7.
But the Panthers defense would hold the Lancers scoreless for the next 44 minutes before cashing in on a 2-yard TD run from Armando Guardado.
Graham completed 23-of-42 for 182 yards, including the one TD and he was picked by Corey Davis.
Glover was a beast for the Lancers, carrying the ball 19 times for 133 yards and a score.
Jordan Rodriguez had a game-high 10 catches for 101 yards in the loss.
PCC’s Jachai Pulley (12), Torriq Brumfield (10), Michael Prappas (10) and Jose Oliveros (10) combined for 42 tackles.
For Chaffey, Dallas Brown led the way with 10 tackles, while Ra’id Bowens and Syrano Ware totaled seven tackles apiece.
Up next: Both programs have next week off.
On Saturday the 14th, Chaffey (5-0) will host West LA, and PCC (4-1) welcomes Santa Monica to their campus.
