Football:

Monrovia has owned the Rio Hondo League penthouse since 2019, and by the looks of it, they’re not looking to hand over the keys anytime soon.

The Wildcats cruised to an RHL-opening 41-7 victory at Temple City.

The boys in green extended their league win streak to 15 consecutive games after scoring the first 41 points on Friday.

Their last RHL loss was a 34-21 setback to San Marino on October 26th, 2018.

And on a side note, there wasn’t a full league schedule in the 2020 COVID-shortened season.

Now, on to Friday.

The Wildcats had one of their most balanced offensive efforts of the season.

Of their 473 yards, 278 came through the air, and the ground game totaled 195 rushing yards.

Brian Salazar continued his torrid start to 2023, going 15-of-22 for 278 yards.

Salazar tossed three TD passes and didn’t turn the ball over.

The MHS senior also rushed for 43 yards on three carries, including one TD run.

Davonte Jones carried much of the load, gaining 112 yards on eight carries and one TD.

Vincent Paez had a big night for the Monrovia receiving corps.

Paez had five catches for 146 yards.

Joshua Griffiths finished with three receptions for 47 yards, and two of the three went for scores.

Noah Ellison caught two passes for 38 yards.

David Alvarez had a team-high 10 tackles for the Wildcats defense.

Tony Grise finished with seven tackles, while Dominic Lino and Iziaih Ainsworth had six tackles apiece.

For Temple City, Jake Jones completed 12-of-20 for 146 yards and one score.

Anfel Serrano carried the ball 18 times for 134 yards.

And Judah Douglas had a game-high eight catches for 98 yards and one TD.
