Football:

For the first time all season, the Rio Hondo Prep football program entered the second quarter trailing an opponent.

RHP fell behind, 7-0, to visiting King’s Academy from Sunnyvale, in a Friday night contest at Kare Park.

But fear not Rio Hondo Prep fans.

The Kares would score the game’s next 28 points and improved to 7-0 after a 28-13 victory.

And to be fair, RHP only trailed for one minute and 43 seconds of game time.

Rio Hondo Prep had a 287-104 advantage on the ground, and they finished with a 327-237 edge in total offense.

Grant Shanafelt caught a 27-yard TD pass from Reid Black with 1:34 to play in the first quarter to give the Knights a 7-0 lead.

Alex Mustain would change that.

On the first play of the second quarter, Mustain hit Tyler Dang on a 37-yard scoring strike to catch King’s Academy at 7-7.

Nate Curtis gave RHP its first lead of the game on a 65-yard TD run, and in the fourth quarter, Curtis’ 5-yard TD run extended the Kares lead to 28-7.

Caeden Holcomb had a 1-yard TD run with just 2:47 remaining in the game.

The Knights closed out the night with a 3-yard TD run from Toby Trotter with 30 seconds left.

Noah Penunuri didn’t score, but he had a game-high 129 yards on 16 carries.

Curtis gained 109 yards on just eight carries, and that included a pair of TD’s.

Holcomb carried the ball 13 times for 54 yards.

Mustain completed just 2-of-7 pass attempts, but one of the two went for the 37-yard score to Dang.

Reid Black went 12-of-23 for 102 yards on Friday night.

He had the opening TD to Shanafelt, and was picked twice.

Joshua Taflinger, David Reyes and Colby Johnson each had a sack for the RHP defense.

Elias Har and Tyler Dang picked off passes in Friday’s win.

Up next: The Kares finally take their bye week, and on Friday, October 13th, RHP travels to Viewpoint to open Gold Coast League play.
