Football:
Damien continues to grind out victory after victory.
And Friday night’s Baseline League opener was no exception.
DHS took 7-0, 14-7 and 21-14 leads, and each time, the Highlanders answered back to catch the Spartans.
But Preston Yado’s 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was the difference in a 24-21 victory.
DHS is now 7-0 in 2023.
Jordan Young caught a 14-yard TD pass from Isaiah Arriaza to take a 7-0 lead.
Upland responded, as Trent Dailey tied the game on a 37-yard run.
Zachary Eguia scored on a 4-yard TD run to give the Spartans a 14-7 advantage at the half.
Trestin Castro would get UHS even in the third period, catching a 31-yard scoring strike from Noah Sandoval.
Arriaza’s second TD pass of the game was a 16-yarder to Gavin Lannon in the third quarter.
Sandoval would tie the game at 21-21 with his 7-yard TD run.
And that left Yado’s chip shot for the win.
This game was so evenly fought that the time of possession battle went to Damien by just 16 seconds.
Eguia had a game-high 123 yards on 21 carries for Damien.
Arriaza finished 11-of-19 for 115 yards and two scores.
Elijah Bechtel led DHS with seven catches for 65 yards, and Lannon caught two passes for 38 yards and one TD.
Sandoval completed 9-of-14 for 132 yards and one TD, and he also gained a team-high 52 yards on nine carries.
Dailey carried the ball 10 times for 46 yards.
Castro had three receptions for 74 yards and Skyler Campbell caught two passes for 33 yards.
Up next: Damien travels to Chino Hills this coming Friday and after a week off, Upland will host Etiwanda on Friday the 13th.
