Football:
Ayala had its character challenged on Friday night.
The Bulldogs were potentially four quarters away from being 1-3.
And they were facing a Chino Hills squad that had won its last three games.
AHS passed that test with flying colors, and they handed CHHS a 42-28 defeat before a sellout crowd at Ayala High School.
It marks the sixth consecutive victory over Chino Hills in the annual ‘Battle for the Bone’ rivalry game.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring with a 47-yard TD run by Marquis Monroe in the 1st quarter.
AHS would take a 14-0 lead when Maximus Barroso hit Jaden Valenzuela on a 66-yard TD pass.
Chino Hills would pull to within 14-7, but Ayala responded, as Monroe sprinted into the end zone from seven yards out.
To their credit, the Huskies scored 14 points in a matter of four minutes, and the game was tied at 21-21 as both programs headed to the break.
The Bulldogs again opened the scoring in the seconnd half, when, just two plays in, Jedi Hernandez ran up the middle for a 67-yard TD run.
Nick Lane booted a 35-yard field goal to extend the AHS lead to 31-21.
Lane followed the 35-yarder with another from 25.
The Huskies used a little trickery to score their final TD of the night.
The play was a jet sweep reverse pass down the field to a wide open receiver.
Monroe would score his third TD of the night, this time from 46 yards out.
Barroso connected with Drew Amico on the 2-point conversion, and the Bulldogs extended their lead to 42-28, which ended up being the final score.
Dawaun Nettingham and Monroe picked off passes for the AHS defense.
In all, Monroe gained 129 yards on 13 carries, and the three scores.
Hernandez carried the ball 12 times for 91 yards and one TD.
Amico led the Bulldogs receiving corps with three catches for 48 yards, and Valenzuela had the one catch for a 66-yard TD.
Barroso completed 7-of-11 for 131 yards.
He tossed one TD and was picked one time.
Along with the two field goals, Lane was also 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts.
For Chino Hills, Nolan Ellison found Cameron Bateman on a 22-yard TD to pull CHHS to within 14-7.
Ellison connected with Jalen Thompson-Delgado on TD passes of 24 and 46 yards to tie the game at 21-21.
Bateman caught a 32-yard TD on a flea flicker for what turned out to be the final points of the game for Chino Hills.
Up next: CHHS and AHS will both be in action next Friday.
The Bulldogs travel to Citrus Valley (1-2), while the Huskies host Foothill (3-1).
