It’s a pretty cool and historic thing to be part of Brandon Hayashi’s Citrus College football team these days.
On Saturday, the Owls ruined Mt. San Jacinto’s home opener in their new stadium by defeating the Eagles, 16-7.
That extends the program’s win streak to 16 games and dates all the way back to October 30th of 2021.
And that also means that Citrus is now the proud author of the state’s longest current win streak after Contra Costa snapped Feather River’s 22-game streak last night.
The Owls used a lockdown defense and a big advantage on the ground to claim victory.
Ironically, two of Citrus’ last three wins have come against the Eagles, including a November 26th (31-20) victory in the American Division championship game last year.
Citrus had a 231-57 edge rushing the ball.
Tayvonne Miller (9-for-77) and Kannon Katzer (16-for-72) accounted for 149 of the 231 yards on the ground.
With 4:40 to play in the first half, Koy Riggin found Miller on a 46-yard TD pass to take a 7-0 lead.
The Owls would extend the advantage to 10-0, as Kosuke Kayahara booted as 27-yard field goal on the last play of the first half.
Nearly 11 minutes into the third quarter, Mt. San Jacinto would pull to within three points when quarterback Hayden Lara scored on a 21-yard run.
But Miller’s three-yard TD on the first play of the fourth quarter would be all the Citrus defense would need to secure win No. 16.
Riggin completed 15-of-21 for 159 yards.
He threw the one TD and was picked once.
Jesse Carmona had five catches for 58 yards, and Miller caught three passes for 59 yards,
Lara completed 17-of-35 for 187 yards, including his rushing TD, and one interception.
The Owls defense totaled three interceptions against two of the Eagles three quarterbacks.
Chandler Carthan had another big game with six tackles and a pick.
His buddy, Drew Merrill, both 2022 Ayala High grads, had three tackles and an interception from the Citrus defensive backfield.
Jamarius Isaac led the Owls with seven tackles, and Fred Martin had three tackles and an interception.
Citrus had a 417-295 advantage in total offense, and edged the Eagles, 30:46-29:14 in the time of possession battle.
Up next: The Owls travel to San Diego to battle Grossmont (0-2) next Saturday.
The kickoff is set for 3.
