Football:
In their first three games of the 2023 season, Bonita scored 89 first-half points in wins over Monrovia, Ontario Christian and La Salle.
On Saturday, the Bearcats took a 7-0 lead to the locker room in the annual Smudge Pot rivalry game with San Dimas.
Freshman quarterback Daniel Mielke said he and four-time CIF championship coach Steve Bogan met up at the half, watched some film and Bogan told Mielke to relax, trust his reads and let his skilled players make plays.
As usual, Bogan knew what he was talking about.
Mielke would toss three TD passes in a 28-0 victory over the Saints at Citrus College.
Bogan is now 5-0 against his SDHS counterpart, Mark Holman.
Mielke went 13-of-21 for 166 yards, and didn’t turn the ball over.
He connected with Jayden Montenegro on a 43-yard TD in the first quarter to give BHS a 7-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Mielke found Ryder Cadam and Noah Mikhail on TD passes of 14 and 19 yards, respectively.
Mikhail capped the Bearcats night with a 10-yard rushing TD in the fourth period.
In spite of being just a freshman, Mielke had a very composed and mature assessment of his and Bonita’s effort on Saturday.
And while crediting his offensive line, skilled players, the defense and coaches, Mielke took none of the credit for himself.
“I missed some opportunities and spoke with Coach Bogan at halftime,” he said. “We watched some film and he told me to trust my reads. There is so much intensity going on in the game and you can’t get caught up in it. San Dimas played well against the run, and they’re a great team and well coached. We shot ourselves in the foot in the first half.
I felt like I held the offense back. Sometimes I tried to make plays and I needed to just trust my guys more. In the second half, I was calm, put trust in my guys and got them the ball so they could do their thing. Defensively, it was all Coach Beatty’s game plan and our boys worked so hard at practice all week. I don’t think they get the credit they deserve.”
The BHS defense didn’t allow one San Dimas completion, and the Saints carried the ball 37 times for 74 yards, which was three more than Bonita’s ground game.
The Bearcats recovered two SDHS fumbles and Bonita didn’t turn the ball over.
Neither team did real well on third-down opportunities.
San Dimas was 3-for-11, while Bonita converted once in 10 tries.
Caleb Morquecho had a game-high 48 yards rushing for SDHS.
Mikhail led BHS with 33 yards on four carries, and he caught the one pass for a 19-yard TD.
Montenegro led Bonita in receptions (6) and receiving yards (74), while Cadam caught four passes for 47 yards.
Up next: BHS and SDHS will both be in action this coming Friday.
The Bearcats travel to Los Osos, and the Saints host Sunny Hills.
