Football:

For the second consecutive week, freshman quarterback Daniel Mielke and the Bonita offense got the Bearcats out to a double-digit road lead.

In the season opener, Monrovia trimmed a 15-point BHS lead to six.

And on Friday, Ontario Christian erased a 31-10 deficit in the fourth quarter.

But the Bearcats withstood rallies from both the Wildcats and the Knights, and they find themselves 2-0 to begin the 2023 season.

With seconds remaining, Manny Franco booted a 40-yard field goal to secure a 34-31 victory.

Mielke had another solid start at QB.

He completed 20-of-36 for 319 yards and two TD’s.

Jayden Montenegro had a monster game, which included 259 combined yards rushing and receiving.

Montenegro carried the ball 15 times for 168 yards, and that included a pair of TD’s.

He also tallied 10 catches for 91 yards and one TD.

Ryder Cadam had a big night with five receptions for 93 yards.

Dylan Robinson caught two passes for 85 yards and a score.

Noah Mikhail had just one reception for 15 yards, but the Bonita junior rushed for 89 yards on 11 carries.

Mikhail’s 14 tackles were twice as many as his next closest teammate (Carter Alba, seven tackles).

Jacob Maddox had six tackles and intercepted two passes.

Up next: The Bearcats will host La Salle on Thursday night at 7.

The Lancers (1-1) fell, 27-6, to Xavier Prep on Friday.
