There is something special about being the quarterback at St. Francis High School.
Leading one of the SGV area’s premier programs into battle every Friday night in front of a packed house at Jim Bonds Stadium is part of that experience.
The Golden Knights’ signal callers have enjoyed a lot of success of late, including three CIF-SS championship game appearances since 2017.
So, having considered that backstory, John Sanders’ performance on Friday night had to be surreal for the SFHS junior.
In game one as St. Francis’ quarterback, Sanders led the Golden Knights to a 58-13 thumping of visiting West Ranch.
He completed 18 of his 30 pass attempts for 260 yards.
And that included five TD’s.
Preston Jernegan caught four, and Kenny Lawyer had the other.
Sanders also rushed for 106 yards on seven carries, and a 46-yard TD run.
It was a complete team effort, but Sanders certainly earned his moment in the sun, and the Golden Knights answered last year’s 61-41 season-opening loss at West Ranch.
Up next: SFHS will host Mira Costa on Friday.
