Football:
Welcome to the big time, John Sanders.
In his first game at the helm of the St. Francis offense, the Golden Knights junior led the program to a 58-13 beatdown of visiting West Ranch.
It had to feel good to pay the Wildcats back for last year’s 61-41 setback in week zero.
But back to Sanders.
He was 18-of-30 for 260 yards through that air, and that includes five TD passes.
But he wasn’t done yet.
Sanders also rushed for north of 100 yards on seven carries, the biggest of which was a 46-yard sprint into the end zone.
St. Francis took a 34-13 lead into the half, and the defense shut West Ranch out in the second half.
Preston Jernegan was Sanders’ favorite target on Friday.
They connected eight times for just under 100 yards and four scores.
John Calmette had a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD and scored on a 1-yard run.
James Lawyer reeled in a 70-yard TD from Sanders.
Up next: The Golden Knights will host Mira Costa on Friday at 7.
The Mustangs (0-0) had a week-zero bye.
