Ayala didn’t do itself any favors by the way they started the first and third quarters in Friday’s season opener.

Thankfully for the Bulldogs, however, they finished both halves strong and edged visiting Colony, 35-28, in a back-and-forth thriller.

AHS outscored the Titans, 14-0, in the decisive fourth quarter.

After three years of Bryan Wilson at the helm of the Ayala offense, Alex Way stepped up and completed 6-of-14 pass attempts for 105 yards.

Way tossed a pair of TD’s and was picked once.

Ayala pounded the Titans run defense, as AHS’ Marquis Monroe and Jedi Hernandez combined for 326 yards rushing and three TD’s.

Monroe had a monster game, carrying the ball 25 times for 211 yards and three scores.

Hernandez rushed for 115 yards on 15 carries.

Hernandez also caught a 14-yard TD pass from Way.

Drew Amico had four receptions for 112 yards and a TD.

Up next: The Bulldogs head out to Rancho Cucamonga on Friday to take on the defending CIF-SS Division 3 champions from Etiwanda.

The Eagles defeated Mira Mesa, 31-21, last night.
