College Baseball:
Cal State San Bernardino didn’t need late inning heroics on Thursday to extend their 2023 season at the NCAA Division 2 World Series.
One day after eliminating top-seeded Millersville, 6-5, the Coyotes pounded out a 16-11 victory over Rollins College.
And the game wasn’t as close as the score might indicate.
The Tars scored five runs in the top of the ninth to narrow the gap.
Josh Sandoval went three innings for CSUSB and allowed two runs on four hits.
Sandoval walked two and fanned three.
Benny Olguin provided five innings in relief and surrendered four runs on six hits to earn the win.
Olguin didn’t issue a walk, registered five strikeouts, and improved his personal record to 8-0.
After Chris Hernandez was roughed up for five runs on two hits and three walks over 2/3 of an inning, Conner Batzer got the final out of the game.
Parker Smith singled, tripled, hit a solo HR and scored three times.
Adam Torres had a pair of singles and three RBIs.
Spencer Sarringar went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs.
Cam Meehan walked, singled twice and drove in a run.
Ryan Furey got the loss, allowing five runs on three hits and three walks over the first 3 1/3 innings.
Danny Garcia had a monster game with two walks, a three-run HR, two runs and five RBIs.
Jason Shedlock walked, singled, hit a solo HR and scored four times.
Daryl Ruiz drew three walks, singled twice, scored three runs and had one RBI.
Giovanni Del Negro went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.
DeShawn Johnson walked, singled, doubled, drove in a run and scored twice.
Grant Macias had a two-run double and a sac fly.
Takuto Kataoka doubled, scored and drove in a pair of runs.
Jake Borst walked and had an RBI single, and Riley Parker singled and scored.
Matt Gonzales and Jeremy Giesegh both had singles for the Coyotes.
Up next: CSUSB will face Rollins again tomorrow (Friday) at 10:30 a.m. Pacific.
