Baseball:
Joseph Moreno had the weight of the South Hills baseball program on his shoulders.
His job was to give the Huskies a chance to play for a CIF-SS Division 2 championship.
And that translated into beating visiting Calabasas in Tuesday’s semifinal round contest.
Moreno did more than his part in a 5-1 victory over the Coyotes.
The sophomore lefty went five innings and allowed one run on one hit.
Moreno walked four and register four strikeouts.
Daniel Camou and Matt Moreno provided one scoreless inning apiece to close out Tuesday’s win.
Simon Hoffman walked and scored in the top of the sixth to get Calabasas to within 2-1 of the Huskies.
Matthew Witkow singled and his RBI ground out scored Hoffman.
Peter Lynch got the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits.
Lynch went 5 1/3 innings, walked one and fanned a pair of Huskies.
South Hills got two runs in the bottom of the second and three more in the sixth to pull away.
Luc Olson surrendered one run on one hit and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Noah Malone went 2-for-3, including a run, and a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
Paul Vazquez singled twice, scored and drove in a run.
Matt Moreno singled and scored.
Marcos Rosales walked, singled and scored.
Steven Jimenez walked and scored in Tuesday’s win.
Luke Bauer had a sac fly in the second to give SHHS a 2-0 lead.
Up next: The Huskies face Crespi in the Division 2 title game.
The Celts (20-7-3) edged Aquinas, 5-3, in eight innings.
