In spite of finishing third in the Valle Vista League, Covina won three playoff games in 2023 than first-place Diamond Ranch (one) and second-place Charter Oak (none) combined.
And by the time their postseason run was over, CHS had more wins than anyone in the VVL.
The Colts outscored their four opponents by a combined margin of 56-15.
CHS defeated Barstow (16-5), University Prep (24-3) and Linfield Christian (11-1) before falling to Northwood, 6-5, on Thursday.
And while every member in a Covina uniform deserves their share of the credit, there is a sophomore named Sabrina Medrano who more than did her part in the Colts success.
Medrano’s stats look like this:
5/2: 16-5 victory at Barstow: walked twice, doubled and drove in two runs
5/4: 24-3 victory over University Prep: HR and three RBIs
5/9: 11-1 victory over Linfield Christian: 3-for-3, walk, two runs & one RBI
5/11: 6-5 loss at Northwood: 2-for-4 with two RBIs
For the season, Medrano batted .333 with 29 hits, 18 runs, 20 RBIs, six doubles, two triples and two home runs.
