College Baseball:
The only thing better than winning the Pac-West Conference Tournament title for APU was the way in which the Cougars accomplished that feat.
After defeating Fresno Pacific, 6-4, on Wednesday, APU got by Point Loma, 9-6, on Thursday.
Fast forward to Friday, and the Cougars trailed Point Loma, 3-0, in the top of the seventh inning.
APU would rally for two in the seventh, six in the eighth and they scored twice in the ninth to defeat the Sea Lions, 10-6, in Fresno.
Cole Colleran did everything he could for Point Loma.
He went six scoreless innings and allowed eight hits.
Colleran issued two walks and fanned one Cougar.
Azusa Pacific would get to Hunter Otjen for six runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Otjen walked one and struck out two APU batters.
Will Stroud had a monster game.
His two-run HR in the top of the seventh got APU to within 3-2 of the Sea Lions.
And one inning later, Stroud hit a three-run shot to give the Cougars their first lead of the game at 6-4.
He finished 3-for-5 with a walk, single, two home runs and five RBIs.
Spencer Rasmussen’s two-run HR in the eighth extended the lead to 8-4.
Will Medina went 2-for-5, scored twice and had two RBIs.
Omar Lopez had three singles and scored one run.
A couple of former Glendora Tartans had a big day.
Carson Collett went 2-for-4, and Cade Marshman singled three times and scored.
Brett Soria walked, singled twice and scored.
Cameron Kessel went four innings, and he allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Kessel didn’t issue a walk and struck out one.
Abraham Carrillo was credited with the win after going three innings and allowing one run on two hits.
Carrillo struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.
Taylor Ouellette went two innings and surrendered two runs on four hits.
Ouellete walked one and struck out a pair of Point Loma batters.
Jakob Christian went 3-for-5, including a solo home run.
Scott Anderson singled three times, scored and had an RBI.
Otjen went 2-for-5 with a run and one RBI.
Jack Malone singled, doubled, scored and had two RBIs.
Ryberg singled, doubled, scored and drove in one run.
Up next: The Cougars open NCAA West Regional play on Thursday with an opponent TBA.
The three-day regional takes place May 18-20.
