Baseball:
The South Hills pitching staff has the Huskies just two wins away from clinching a potential CIF-SS Division 2 championship.
Entering Friday’s D-2 quarterfinal against visiting West Ranch, they boasted an insane 1.20 team ERA.
And that went down on Friday.
Sterling Patick went six innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits to lead South Hills to a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats.
Patick walked three and struck out five.
He threw 94 pitches, with 61 going for strikes.
And Joseph Moreno would close out the win and earn the save after going a perfect seventh inning in relief.
Moreno got one West Ranch batter via strikeout.
The Wildcats scored their run in the top of the sixth when Bret Potter reached base on an error, and he scored on Nolan Stoll’s single.
Stoll had half of West Ranch’s four hits.
Aidan Buntich doubled, and Potter singled and scored.
Shane Buchbinder would surrender one run on no hits and two walks over his 1 1/3 innings.
Andrew Greenberg allowed an unearned run on two hits over 4 2/3 innings.
Greenberg walked one and registered five strikeouts.
Noah Malone led off the bottom of the second with a walk, and he scored on Malaki Pelayo’s two-out single to center.
In the bottom of the fifth, Paul Vazquez was hit by pitch to start the inning.
He would eventually score on a throwing error by the Wildcats third baseman.
Dom Prieto had the Huskies other hit on Friday.
The West Ranch pitching staff hit three batters, walked three more and combined for eight strikeouts.
Up next: The Huskies will host Calabasas on Tuesday.
The Coyotes (22-9) edged Gahr, 3-1, in their quarterfinal round contest on Friday.
