Considering the fact that Justin Santiago and Ian Hoffstetter had ERA’s of 1.49 or lower, it was a little surprising to see both aces face first-inning drama in Wednesday’s CIF-SS Division 1 opener at AHS.
The Bearcats would send eight guys to the plate and scored four runs on a hit batter, error, fielder’s choice, two singles and a double.
For their part, the Apaches loaded the bases with no outs, sent seven batters to the plate, but only scored once.
Devon Eskridge walked, Fernando Palencia singled and Christian Garcia walked.
Santiago got Avery Truesdale on strikes, but the BHS senior followed that by walking Brayden Herrera with the bases loaded.
At one point in the bottom of the first, Bonita catcher Garrett Patterson started to walk towards the pitcher’s mound and Santiago waived him off like “I’ve got this.”
And apparently he did, because Santiago got Jerry Carlos looking and Ben Cooper swinging to end the threat.
Bonita out-hit Arcadia, 12-7, and the Bearcats took advantage of three AHS errors that resulted in five unearned runs.
Hoffstetter went 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits.
He walked three and struck out three BHS batters.
Fernando Palencia would replace Hoffstetter in the fifth inning, and he surrendered six runs (four earned) on two hits over his two innings on the mound.
Palencia walked three, struck out four and hit three batters.
Tyler Holley went 2-for-3 with two walks, a pair of singles, scored twice and had two RBIs.
Jared Brunk singled twice, doubled and drove in a pair of runs.
Diego Vazquez went 3-for-4 and scored twice.
Colton Perez walked, singled twice, scored and had one RBI.
Garrett Patterson and Diego Villa walked twice and scored two runs apiece.
Andrew Sanchez had a walk, single and RBI.
Austin Owens singled and scored.
Bryan Bradshaw walked twice, scored and had one RBI.
Santiago got the win, going 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
Santiago issued five walks and registered nine strikeouts.
Patterson would get the final four outs, half of which came via strikeout.
Eskridge walked, singled and scored.
Palencia drew a pair of walks and singled twice.
Garcia walked twice, singled and had an RBI.
Leo Peniche went 2-for-3 and scored.
Kennan Wilson singled for the Apaches.
