College Baseball:
Pasadena City College needed to win its last six games to secure the No. 2 seed out of the South Coast Conference.
And on Friday, they can say, mission accomplished.
Jakob Guardado went the distance in the Lancers’ 6-5 victory over Compton.
Guardado surrendered three earned runs on eight hits.
He issued one walk and struck out eight Compton batters.
The Tartars scored three in the top of the ninth, but with the tying run on second, Guardado got Jose Contreras on strikes.
Zaid Humphrey, who was replaced in the lineup by Contreras late in the game, went 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and scored a run.
Tervell Johnson doubled, scored and drove in two.
Crixtian Taveras had an RBI double.
Johnathon Enriquez singled and scored.
Joseph Garcia got the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit and seven walks.
PCC only had six hits on Friday, but the number one team in the state in drawing walks, totaled 10 bases on balls and five stolen bases.
Aryonis Harrison walked, singled, stole second and third and scored on a bad throw.
Jake Trabbie walked twice, singled and scored.
Guardado walked twice, singled and scored.
Toshiki Kuriya doubled and scored.
Tommy Castillo walked, singled, scored, had an RBI and stole two bases.
Amaris Harrison walked and stole a base.
Josh Hernandez walked and had an RBI on a sac fly.
Up next: PCC will get its playoff opponent this Sunday.
The Lancers will be making their fifth consecutive postseason appearance in 2023.
Lastly, I asked PCC coach Pat McGee to talk about sweeping their last two opponents, how his program stepped up big time, and who he wanted to credit for this solid run.
Said Pat McGee: “When we looked at the season, we started with a gauntlet of teams. From all the playoff contenders, we knew we played the front end of the schedule with the tops teams. And we felt we could control our destiny if we did well in the first half of the season and we did that. This is third time we needed to sweep the last two series (2018, 2019, 2022) to make the playoffs, so our kids came in battle tested and understood what they needed to do to earn this playoff spot. It was led by our pitching staff and each of them did their part in helping get the job done. The performance of our sophomores has been historic. Their leadership and the way they carried us from the beginning to the end has set the standard for this program. The leadership of (Jake Trabbie, Aryonis Harrison, Jakob Guardado, Rider Gardner, Coleman Mitchell and more) of players that in some cases have been in the program for three years has been invaluable, and every day they’ve lived up to the standards and high expectations we set as a program.”
