Baseball:
Etiwanda opened the 2023 season as the defending Baseline League and CIF-Southern Section Division 2 champions.
As the final week began, however, and with three games remaining, the Eagles found themselves two back of first-place Damien.
EHS claimed victories of 11-3, and 6-5, on Monday and Wednesday, respectively, and that set up a winner-take-all scenario on Friday.
Etiwanda trailed 1-0 in the top of the third.
But the Eagles scored three times in the third, and they got two more in the fifth to secure a 7-1 victory at DHS.
There are a lot of big names in the Etiwanda lineup, and perhaps none gets less credit for doing more than Nico Neri.
Neri went the distance and allowed one run on three hits.
He issued two walks and struck out six Damien batters.
Neri needed 103 pitches to finish what he started.
Of those 103, 69 went for strikes.
Justin Dunn walked, singled and scored the Spartans lone run of the game in the bottom of the first.
Julian Hines’ first-inning RBI single gave DHS a 1-0 lead.
Christian Grino’s single accounted for Damien’s other base hit on Friday.
Nathan Ries surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits.
Ries went four innings, walked two and struck out three Etiwanda batters.
The top four batters in the Eagles lineup went a combined 8-for-16 with six runs and two RBIs.
Austen Roellig went 2-for-4 with a walk and the senior scored once.
Brady Ebel walked, singled twice and scored three runs.
Anthony Huezo went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Tyler McEvoy had a single, double and one RBI.
Parker Sobiesiak singled and drove in three runs.
Tyler Shigenaka walked twice, scored and had an RBI on a sac fly.
Luke Mendoza walked and singled.
