Baseball:
For the second time in 48 hours, Glendora hung with arguably the SGV’s best 1-2 punch of a pitching staff.
On Tuesday, Justin Santiago tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out 13 in a 2-0 win.
And on Thursday, Garrett Patterson, who was coming off a no-hitter against Claremont, went eight innings in a 2-1 victory over the visiting Tartans.
Glendora took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Bearcats got single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to remain tied atop the Palomares League standings with Ayala.
With two games to play, BHS and AHS are 7-1 in league games, having split a two-game series last month.
As mentioned, Patterson went eight innings and allowed one run on two hits.
He issued one walk and fanned 11 Tartans.
In the top of the third, Mason Danison singled, Caleb Nguyen bunted him over and Ajay Rollice’s single gave GHS a 1-0 lead.
That would be it for the GHS offense, as Patterson did not give up a hit after the third inning.
Michael Moses went seven strong innings for GHS.
He surrendered one run on nine hits.
Moses walked two and struck out five BHS batters.
In the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Holley doubled and Jared Brunk reached on a bunt single.
Brunk was picked, but Diego Villa’s RBI double tied the game at 1-1.
Colton Perez led off the eighth with a single to right, and then moved to second on a passed ball.
Perez advanced to third on Patterson’s fly out, and he scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
Perhaps most impressive was the fact that Patterson needed just 90 pitches to earn an eight-inning win.
Of those, 66 went for strikes.
Holley went 2-for-3 with the run.
Perez went 3-for-4 and scored the game winner.
Up next: GHS and Bonita face Ayala and Colony, respectively, in a pair of two-game series to close out the 2023 regular season.
