Baseball:
It doesn’t take a baseball afficionado to understand just how vital a good pitching staff is to winning titles.
And it would be hard to find a program in the southern section that boasts two guys that have thrown no-hitters in 2023.
But Bonita has in Justin Santiago and Garrett Patterson.
Santiago took the mound on Tuesday in the Bearcats first-place showdown at Glendora.
With four Palomares League games to play, Bonita entered Tuesday tied with Ayala and GHS.
And while Santiago may not have thrown another no-hitter, his results were nearly as impressive, and just as important.
Bonita defeated the Tartans, 2-0, as Santiago tossed a three-hit shutout.
Santiago walked two and fanned 13.
The BHS senior struck out eight Tartans at least once, and he got five GHS batters twice on strikes.
Michael Moses, Joseph Gilkeson and Aaron Jacobsen had one single apiece for GHS.
Bonita got one run on five hits over five innings off Evan Ellis.
Ellis walked two and struck out five.
John Nolan went two innings and was charged with an unearned run on two hits.
Nolan didn’t issue a walk and fanned three BHS batters.
Garrett Patterson singled and had an RBI double in the fourth to give Bonita 1-0 lead.
Patterson singled in the sixth and would eventually steal home on a first-and-third play.
Colton Perez walked, singled and scored.
Bryan Bradshaw, Andrew Sanchez and Austin Owens singled.
Tyler Holley doubled in Tuesday’s win.

Quotable:
Bonita coach, Ryan Marcos: “Justin Santiago is one of the best high school pitchers in the country physically, because he’s got a natural talent. But he doesn’t take that for granted, and he prepares for each game days in advance. His mentality is on another level this year. We’ve seen just how mentally tough he can be when he digs deep in big situations and pushes his body to repeat quality pitches when it matters most and that’s what’s so special, his ability to kick it into another level.
Justin gave a phenomenal effort today against a good hitting Glendora team. We talked about not sweating the small stuff before the game, basically just leaving it all on the field. He did what he does: maintained focus, composure, and great energy throughout every pitch of every inning. Justin and the Bonita baseball team don’t focus on rankings, standings, or stats. Instead, it’s back to the drawing board one game at a time and let’s leave it all on the field Thursday in round two with a competitive Glendora team.”
