Baseball:
If Damien is able to secure a Baseline League championship, it would be hard not to consider Andrew Carter for the league’s MVP.
Carter doesn’t just win, he goes deep into every outing.
On Monday, Carter went six scoreless in a 7-0 victory at Rancho Cucamonga.
Carter allowed just two hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out a pair of RCHS batters.
He needed just 57 pitches to hand the ball off to Colin Olsen, who got the final three outs.
With five games to play, Damien holds a one-game lead over the defending Baseline League and CIF-SS Division 2 champs from Etiwanda.
The Eagles defeated Los Osos, 7-5, and the two programs meet up for a three-game set next week.
Jose Gutierrez, Brock Foulds and Owen Dunn had one single each to account for the Cougars offense.
Dunn went six innings and surrendered seven runs (four earned) on six hits.
Dunn walked two and fanned four Spartans batters.
Justin Dunn went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI.
Tyler Daley had a pair of singles, an RBI and scored two runs.
Christian Grino singled, doubled, and drove in three.
Nikko Paoletto walked, doubled and scored.
Daniel Serna singled, scored and had one RBI.
Bryant Poland walked and scored.
Jett Hernandez had a sac fly in the top of the third that gave the Spartans a 4-0 lead.
Up next: The Spartans host the Cougars on Wednesday at 3:15.
