Trailing 3-0 & Being No-Hit in 6th by No. 3 Program in State, South Hills Rallies to Beat Valley Christian, 4-3, at National Classic

Baseball:

South Hills picked up a signature victory at the National Classic on Wednesday.

Trailing 3-0 in the top of the sixth, and being no-hit by Michael Castaneda, the Huskies rallied for four runs and defeated Valley Christian of San Jose, 4-3, at Cypress Park in Irvine.

Matt Moreno started the rally with a ground ball over the first baseman’s head.

Marcos Rosales would single to load the bases.

Paul Vazquez singled to score Moreno.

After Steven Jimenez walked with the bases loaded, Luke Bauer reached base on an error that scored Vazquez.

Rosales would score the eventual game winning run.

Castaneda went from being six outs away from tossing a no-hitter to Wednesday’s loser.

Castaneda went five-plus allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits.

He walked three and struck out six.

Rosales went 2-for-4 with a run.

Landon Hanson walked twice and scored.

Joseph Moreno went five innings for SHHS and surrendered three runs (two earned) on three hits.

Moreno walked seven and struck out five.

Matt Moreno closed out the win with two scoreless innings and allowing one hit.

Matt Moreno didn’t issue a walk and struck out a pair of VCHS batters.

Carmelo Rivera singled and scored.

Tatum Marsh walked twice, singled and scored.

Up next: The Huskies face Damien on Thursday at noon.

The game will be played at Amerige Park in Fullerton.
